About Me

Hi! I’m Brandy Nakamura, and I’m a professional counselor providing person-centered online therapy to the international community of Japan. My focus is on providing a supportive space to process your experiences and on helping you build resilience and find emotional balance between cultures.

Living abroad can be both beautiful and a challenge, and I know that journey firsthand. As someone who has walked many of the same paths, I care deeply about supporting the international community here in Japan. My passion is to walk alongside others, as we experience the joys, struggles, and transitions of life in a foreign culture together.

I have a special heart for expats, international students, multicultural families, and returnees. From Kyoto, I provide teletherapy sessions for individuals, couples, and families throughout Japan and for those connecting from abroad in Tennessee (USA). Together, we’ll explore thoughts, emotions, and goals in a safe, nonjudgmental space.

Over 15 years ago, my young family and I moved to Japan, a life-changing experience that brought both opportunities and challenges. As I navigated raising my children in this new culture, I focused on learning the language (still working on that!), adapting to local customs, and finding our place between two worlds.

Throughout my time here, I became increasingly aware of the unique struggles faced by individuals and families returning from life abroad, as well as those from multicultural backgrounds. These experiences opened my eyes and stirred something deep within me.

I realized I wanted to be part of the solution, to support and empower this community as they also navigate these complex transitions. This is what fuels my passion and drives the work that I do.

Together, we’ll tackle issues related to cultural adjustment. Some of these issues include feelings of isolation, difficulty managing stress, feelings of depression and anxiety. We’ll also address unexpected relationship changes that often follow times of intense adjustment. These changes can feel overwhelming, especially for those who have had a history of emotional issues or trauma. For some of us, this adjustment process is ongoing and unresolved feelings resurface from time to time. If you find yourself struggling, I’d love to help you.

In our work, I’ll help you process and make sense of difficult feelings, find new perspectives on your story, and take practical steps toward positive change. My goal is for you to leave each session feeling supported, empowered, and more hopeful about the path ahead.
